Avila Surfboards first began in 1997 when Mauricio Avila shaped his first board.During this year he was attending his 2nd semester at college in Brazil, when the whole university went on a massive strike. Since classes were canceled he decided to try and do something different with his life. He made a few boards for himself, his brother and for some of his close friends. Mauricioís boards created great enthusiasm from the group and word quickly spread. A few months and hundreds of boards later, things really got going when started his company. His goal was, and still is, to make the most accurate and precise board for his clients. He is obsessed with finding the best material and optimal techniques for shaping and glassing. In 1999 he bought his first DSD (insert here what that stands for surfboard shaping machine). This helped him to refine his shaping and produceconsistency all around. He always said ìNow that I have a shaping machine, I can spend more time talking with surfers in order to get more precise information to build a board, rather than devotingmany hours to rough shaping a blank.î In 2001, he decided to visit California, only planning to stay few months to improve his shaping skills. But it all changed. He started from scratch again, making boards for friends and his few team riders. Avila Surfboards was reestablished in Southern California. The company is now based in San Diego. Only using top quality materials and high-tech machinery made by highly skilled craftsman and sold to clients all over the world.
